A group of several community living agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities from Burnaby, New Westminster, the Tri-cities, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge have come together to form the Simon Fraser Region Crisis Advisory Group. The purpose of the group is to plan for crisis at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels for adults with intellectual disabilities and their families.
The specific goals of the group are to:
• Establish a Crisis Response Advisory Committee.
• Increase collaboration among relevant community services.
• Develop an inventory of services to assist in crisis management. Inventory will include facilities, staff expertise and resources.
• Create a Community Crisis Response Services Plan.
The Simon Fraser Crisis Advisory Group was created on April 9, 2010. As of March 1, 2010, the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) has taken the lead in this initiative. BACI enlisted a project coordinator to bring together a collaborative group of stakeholders in the community.
The Simon Fraser Region Crisis Advisory Group representatives will attend scheduled meetings, participate in the crisis planning process, and identify potential internal resources, assets, and organizational strengths that support a comprehensive region-wide crisis plan. While there is still much work to be done at the organizational and systemic level, the group is at the stage where we feel we can respond to individual crisis situations as they arise.
At an appropriate juncture in the future planning process, the Group will include representatives from fire departments, police detachments, health services, mental health services and other community groups with an intention of increasing collaboration at organizational interfaces.
