Over the years, I have spoken to many parents who are on waitlists but urgently need help with their child who has an intellectual disability. I have heard the same story many times of a stressed-out parent who when pushed against the wall, and can no longer cope, walks into the MCFD office and threatens to leave their child behind. Magically, I am told the funding is arranged. I can only guess that when forced to look at the difference in cost between a child supported at home and government care, the government sees that it is cheaper to support the family.
How sad that parents are pushed to such an extreme of threatening to leave a loved one behind. I hope that one day families will not have to resort to such strident advocacy to get help.Social tagging: Services for People with Intellectual Disabilities
